The Asymmetric Digital War: The Case for Democratizing State Defense.

Stylized AI worm crawling across a digital network, representing self-propagating AI-driven cyber threats

I'm always amazed at how fast this technology is, as an AI engineer. I am a big believer in open source; the democratization of intelligence is a huge new chapter in the evolution of our planet.

Yet every powerful paradigm shift casts a shadow. The same technology we build with can be weaponized.

We already know what cyber warfare at the state level looks like. The historic leak of Vault 7 revealed an arsenal of weaponized hacking tools created by intelligence agencies. Crucially, it revealed elements like UmBRAGE, frameworks designed to mimic the digital fingerprints of foreign cybercriminal networks to frame other countries, making accurate attribution nearly impossible.

Such sophisticated, deceptive warfare historically required millions of dollars and a nation-state infrastructure.

AI changes that math completely.

Today's sophisticated agentic workflows give everyday people and cybercriminal networks 'state–like powers'. A malicious actor can use AI to adapt to network environments in real-time and create self-propagating worms, all while masking their origins through advanced impersonation. The democratization of AI has a terrifying side effect: the offensive sophistication and false-flag capabilities once locked inside Vault 7 are now available to anyone with a laptop.

We can no longer afford to trust centralized state defenses. Governments are inherently slow, bureaucratic, and designed to protect their own critical infrastructure first. And while corporations have the capital to fund their own enterprise-grade fortresses, the everyday person is left entirely exposed.

This means we have to meet a crucial systemic need:

If the "bad guys" have access to state-level offensive sophistication and the ability to fabricate attribution, then state-level defensive systems must be democratized down to the citizen level. We cannot have these protective levels reserved only for governments and wealthy corporations. This does not benefit civilians.

We must stop accepting consumer-grade security for state-level threats. Traditional firewalls and reactive antivirus are like holding up a wooden shield against a plasma railgun.

We need AI defense networks that are open, autonomous and proactive, and accessible to all. Defense has to be as intelligent, as scalable, and as open source as the attacks are. Every developer, every citizen, and every individual needs access to a living digital immune system: AI agents that can kill mutating, deceptive malware in milliseconds.

The future of cybersecurity is not a government mandate anymore. It is a right that has been democratized.
