Before You Give Your Team Autonomous AI Agents, Educate Them on How to Think With Them

Two-tiered AI literacy: employee-level AI literacy and leadership-level strategic AI literacy, visualized as two complementary learning paths

Before you give your team autonomous AI agents, educate them on how to think with them.

Many AI education programs stop at showing employees which buttons to press. They treat AI literacy like software training: memorize the interface, follow the steps, ship the work. But agents change the equation. They don't just execute; they decide. When employees don't understand how agents arrive at outputs, two failures show up.

Recently, I sat with a leadership team considering a company-wide agent rollout. They had a clear technical roadmap. What they didn't have was a shared vocabulary for talking about how agents reason, where they fail, or what employees should do when outputs look wrong. They were deploying decision-making tools to people who had never been taught how those decisions get made.

Two levels of literacy are non-negotiable.

1. AI Literacy for Employees: your team needs to understand how agents consume prompts, where context is lost, and why the same prompt can produce different outputs on different days. They need to know what an agent does NOT do (it doesn't "know" anything in the human sense) so they stop trusting hallucinations and start verifying outputs.

2. Strategic AI Literacy for Leaders: executives need a different lens. They don't need prompt engineering; they need to evaluate which problems are agent-suitable, which aren't, and how to allocate budgets between experimentation and integration. Leaders must recognize vendor hype without becoming engineers themselves.

My Take: Organizations that skip education and jump straight to deployment create a dangerous illusion of competence. Teams appear to be working faster while quietly shipping unverified outputs to customers. Agents amplify whatever process you give them, including the broken ones.
